Class 10 results are out in May
Three real routes
after Class 10.
Class 11 with a stream, a polytechnic diploma, or an ITI trade. They cost different amounts, take different lengths of time, and start paying at different points. Here's all three, side by side, with what each one closes off.
The three routes, side by side
Pick by how you like to learn and how soon you need to earn — not by which one sounds best.

Every field — and where each one actually starts
Some of these you can join right after Class 10. Others only open after Class 12, and it's better to know that now.
Engineering & Technology
Can start after Class 10B.Tech and B.E. across every branch, plus the diploma and lateral-entry routes. The largest professional education sector in India, and the one with the widest gap between a seat and a job.
Medical & Healthcare
Can start after Class 10Medicine, dentistry, nursing and the hospital roles around them. The most competitive entry in Indian education, and the field where knowing the alternatives to MBBS matters most.
Management & Business
Opens after Class 12BBA, MBA and the management routes into general business, marketing, operations and human resources - plus the integrated programmes that start straight after Class 12.
Design & Creative
Can start after Class 10Product, communication, fashion, interior and digital design, animation and the creative disciplines - where a portfolio decides more than a degree does.
Hotel Management
Opens after Class 12Hotels, restaurants, kitchens, cruise lines and events - a hands-on service industry with fast progression for those who stay, and hard early years.
Aviation & Hospitality
Can start after Class 10The service side of air travel - cabin crew, ground staff, check-in, customer service and airport operations. Short training, an age-sensitive window, and a heavily scammed sector.
Law & Legal Studies
Opens after Class 12The legal profession in India - how you qualify, and the four very different careers a law degree leads to.
Defence & Police

IT & Computer Applications
Can start after Class 10Software development, data, systems and IT support, entered through BCA, B.Sc Computer Science, MCA or B.Tech - and one of the few fields that genuinely hires on skill rather than pedigree.
Why it matters now
What this one choice actually decides
Not your whole life — but four specific things that are hard to undo once the admission closes.
Which subjects you can take
Physics and Biology in Class 11 are what make NEET and JEE possible at all.
Which exams you're eligible for
NDA, NEET and JEE all read your Class 12 subjects. Diploma opens different doors.
When you start earning
ITI can pay from year two. A degree route usually means year six.
How easily you can switch
Diploma to B.Tech is a normal move. Commerce to Science after Class 11 rarely is.
The next six months
Nothing here waits for you
Typical dates for most state boards. Check your own board and state portal — some run two weeks ahead.
Board exams
Shortlist two routes now, while you still have time to think about it calmly.
Results
Marks decide which stream your school will give you, and which diplomas are in reach.
Forms open
Class 11 admission at school, and polytechnic applications on the state portal.
Counselling rounds
Diploma seats are allotted round by round. Missing one round costs you a year.
ITI admission, then classes
ITI intake closes last. After this, changing route means waiting for next year.
Asked by students and parents
The questions that come up most
Can I do a diploma straight after Class 10?
Yes. Polytechnic diplomas take students directly after Class 10 through state counselling, usually on Class 10 marks or a small entrance test. You finish in three years, which is one year after your friends finish Class 12.
Is ITI a step down from Class 11 and 12?
It's a different bet, not a lower one. ITI trains you in one trade and you can be earning within two years, often with an apprenticeship attached. What it doesn't give you is a Class 12 certificate, so exams like NEET, JEE and NDA stay closed unless you complete Class 12 later through open schooling.
If I take Commerce now, can I switch to Science later?
Almost never after Class 11 begins, because Science needs two years of Physics, Chemistry and Maths that you can't compress. Going the other way — Science to Commerce — is common and usually allowed. Choose Science if you're genuinely undecided; it keeps more options open.
Do I have to pick a career right now?
No. You're picking a stream or a course, and each one keeps several careers open. What matters at this stage is not closing off a subject you might need — the rest can wait until Class 12.
What if my marks are lower than I hoped?
Marks affect which school stream and which diploma seats you get, not whether you have a route. Vocational Class 11 subjects, ITI trades and open-school Class 12 all stay available, and diploma holders can still reach B.Tech through lateral entry.
How much does each route cost?
Government polytechnics and ITIs are the cheapest, often ₹3,000–20,000 a year. Private diplomas run ₹40,000–60,000. Class 11 and 12 at a government school costs very little; a private school with coaching is usually the most expensive path of the three.
Still torn between two routes?
Answer a few questions about your marks, your budget and how soon you need to earn. You'll get the routes that fit best, and what each one closes off.
Fees and pay ranges are typical figures for India, not guarantees. Always confirm dates and eligibility with your board or state portal.
