Overview
Chemical engineering designs and runs the processes that turn raw materials into products at industrial scale — refining crude oil, making petrochemicals and polymers, manufacturing pharmaceuticals, fertilisers, paints, specialty chemicals and processed food. It sits between chemistry and engineering, and it is fundamentally about doing in a plant what works in a beaker.
How you get in. A four-year B.Tech after Class 12 with PCM through JEE or a state entrance, or a polytechnic diploma after Class 10 with lateral entry later. M.Tech or a specialisation in process design, petroleum refining or biochemical engineering follows for those going into design and research.
Where the work is, and this is the branch's real strength. The oil, gas and refining public sector undertakings recruit chemical engineers through GATE, and those posts are among the best-paid entry positions available to any fresh engineering graduate in India. Beyond them: pharmaceutical manufacturing, fertiliser and agrochemical plants, specialty chemicals, FMCG production, food processing, environmental and effluent treatment, and process design consultancy.
The honest part. Campus recruitment in this branch is thinner than in computer science, and a chemical engineering degree does not carry the same automatic placement. The PSU route is the prize, and it is won by treating GATE as a target from the second year rather than something to look at in the final semester. Beyond that, core work means plants, and plants are in industrial towns rather than metros — Jamnagar, Vadodara, Paradip, Dahej. It means shift work, safety discipline and a posting decided by where the plant is. Engineers who accept that build stable, well-paid, technically serious careers; those who wanted a city job find out late.

Common questions
Chemical engineering applies chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering to design and operate processes that transform raw materials into useful products. It supports chemicals, energy, food, pharmaceuticals, materials and environmental systems.
This field may suit students who enjoy chemistry and mathematics but also want to solve large-scale process and production problems. Safety awareness, analytical thinking and patience with technical calculations are important.
The common degree route is Class 11–12 Science with required subjects followed by BE/B.Tech in Chemical Engineering or a related branch. Polytechnic diplomas and lateral-entry options may be available under institution-specific rules.
Build chemistry, mathematics, physics, material and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid flow, process control, computing, data analysis, documentation and process-safety awareness.
Roles include process engineering, production, safety, quality, design, energy, pharmaceuticals, food processing, water treatment, materials and environmental compliance. Locations often cluster around industrial centres.
