Overview
Cloud computing is the practice of running systems on managed infrastructure rather than on machines you own. The roles around it are cloud engineer and architect, DevOps engineer, platform engineer and site reliability engineer, and cloud security. The common thread is automation: infrastructure defined in code, deployments that run themselves, and systems that recover without a person watching.
How you get in. Through a computing degree or, very commonly, by moving across from software development, systems administration, networking or IT support. The major certification tracks from AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud structure the learning well and are genuinely respected. Beyond them, the skills that get tested are Linux, networking fundamentals, at least one scripting language, containers and orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code tooling.
Where the work is. Product companies and startups running their own platforms, IT services and consulting firms managing client migrations, the cloud providers and their partner ecosystem, banks and enterprises moving off their own data centres, and managed service providers.
The honest part. Cloud is an experience-led field, and the certifications are frequently sold as though it were not. Employers hire cloud and DevOps engineers to take responsibility for systems that lose money when they break, and they are reluctant to hand that to someone who has never operated a system in production. A fresher holding three cloud certificates and no operational experience will find far fewer doors open than the marketing implies. The route that works is the indirect one: get into software, support or infrastructure first, take on the deployment and reliability work nobody else wants, get the certification while doing it, and move across on the strength of what you have actually run. Two years of that beats any number of badges.

Common questions
Cloud computing provides servers, storage, databases, networking and software platforms through managed data centres. Professionals design, operate, automate, secure and optimise these environments.
This field may suit students interested in systems, networking, automation and reliable services. Troubleshooting, documentation and responsible cost and security management are important.
Routes usually begin with IT, computer science, engineering, networking or systems education, supported by practical cloud projects and vendor certifications where useful. Strong fundamentals should come before platform-specific memorisation.
Build networking, Linux, scripting, virtualization, containers, databases, identity, security, infrastructure automation, monitoring, cost awareness and documentation.
Roles include cloud support, cloud engineer, systems administrator, DevOps associate, site-reliability professional, platform engineer and cloud-security specialist.
