About Government and Defence
Government employment in India is reached almost entirely by written examination, which makes it one of the few sectors where background, connections and the college you attended count for very little. The routes divide into the civil services at the top, defence and police, staff selection and railway recruitment, public sector banking, and government teaching — each covered on the pages beneath this one.
How the ecosystem is structured. Recruitment is organised by qualification level rather than by subject. Class 10 opens multi-tasking, railway group posts and constable recruitment. Class 12 opens clerical, data entry and a range of technical posts. A bachelor degree in any subject opens the largest set — graduate-level staff selection posts, banking probationary officer examinations, railway non-technical posts, sub-inspector recruitment and the civil services. Technical qualifications open junior engineer and specialist officer routes. Age limits, attempt limits and category relaxations apply throughout and vary by examination.
The shape almost all of them share. A notification, a preliminary objective paper, a main examination, then an interview or a physical and medical stage, then document verification. Preparation overlaps heavily across examinations — quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English, and general awareness recur almost everywhere — which means preparing for several at once is usually more efficient than preparing for one.
The honest part, and it is the most important advice on this page. Apply broadly rather than narrowly. The single most damaging pattern in Indian government preparation is a candidate who commits years to one high-prestige examination with a sub-one-per-cent pass rate, refuses the ones they could realistically clear, and emerges at thirty with no qualification, no work history and no post. The examinations differ enormously in difficulty and hardly at all in the security they provide. Prepare alongside a degree or a job rather than instead of one, sit for every examination your qualification allows, decide in advance how many years you will give it, and treat clearing a state or staff selection post as a success rather than a compromise — it is a permanent government job, which is what you wanted.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is there one examination for all government jobs?
No. Different departments and recruiting bodies use separate eligibility, syllabi and selection processes.
Can I get a government job after Class 10?
Some posts may accept Class 10, while many require Class 12, diploma, graduation or professional qualifications. Check each notification.
Can coaching guarantee selection?
No. Selection depends on eligibility and performance in official stages. Guaranteed recruitment claims are fraudulent or misleading.
Are defence physical standards universal?
No. Physical and medical requirements vary by service, entry, post, category and notification.
Where should I check vacancies?
Use only the recruiting department or authorised examination body’s official website and notification.
Why is a backup plan important?
Recruitment is competitive and timelines can change. Continuing education and employable skills prevents preparation from becoming an all-or-nothing risk.
