Overview
The judicial services are the route to the bench. Entry is at two levels: the civil judge junior division examination, taken by law graduates at the start of their careers, and the higher judicial service examination, taken by advocates with several years of practice. Both are conducted by state public service commissions or High Courts, state by state.
How it works. Eligibility is an LLB and enrolment with a Bar Council; some states require a minimum period of practice for entry-level posts and others do not, so the notification for your state is the thing to read. The examination runs in three stages — a preliminary objective paper, written papers, and an interview. Age limits apply and vary by state and category.
What it tests, and this is where preparation differs from a law degree. The papers are procedure-heavy: the Code of Civil Procedure, the criminal procedure and penal codes, the Evidence Act, contract and property law, and the local laws of the state you are applying in. Most states also set a language paper in the state language, requiring drafting and translation ability, and candidates from other states routinely underestimate it. Judgment writing is tested directly — you are asked to decide a matter on the facts given, not to describe the law.
Why it deserves more attention than it gets. Of everything a law degree opens, this is the most level. Selection is by examination rather than by which college you attended or who you know, the salary is defined from the first day under the pay commission scales, and the career progresses by rule towards the district judiciary and, for some, the High Court. Compare that with litigation, where juniors earn a token stipend for years, and with corporate practice, where hiring concentrates on a handful of institutions. It is competitive and the preparation is demanding, but for a law graduate without family backing in the profession, this is frequently the strongest option available — and it is under-attempted because far less money is spent advertising it.

Common questions
Judicial careers apply law independently to resolve disputes, protect rights and administer justice under constitutional and statutory systems.
Eligibility normally requires a recognised law degree and success in the applicable judicial-service recruitment process; experience rules vary by post and jurisdiction.
Legal doctrine, procedure, evidence, judgment writing, research, language, ethics, impartiality, current affairs and disciplined examination preparation.
Judicial services, court research, judicial clerkships, legal academia and related justice-system roles, subject to official qualifications.
Recruitment is highly competitive and notification-specific. Coaching cannot guarantee selection, and candidates must maintain strong ethics, accuracy and backup pathways.
