Overview
The Staff Selection Commission and the Railway Recruitment Boards run the largest government hiring in the country outside the armed forces. Between them they fill tens of thousands of posts a year across ministries, departments and the railways, and they do it purely by written examination.
The main examinations. SSC CGL for graduate-level posts including inspector, assistant and auditor roles across central departments; SSC CHSL for higher secondary level clerical and data entry posts; SSC MTS for multi-tasking staff; SSC GD for constable posts in the central armed police forces; SSC JE for diploma and degree engineers. On the railway side, RRB NTPC for non-technical graduate and higher secondary posts, RRB Group D for entry-level posts, and RRB ALP and technician for assistant loco pilot and technical roles. Most require Class 10, Class 12 or a bachelor degree in any subject, with age limits varying by post and category.
Why this deserves more attention than it gets. These examinations hire on a scale UPSC does not approach, and they offer the same things people want from government service: security, defined pay scales, pension arrangements, transfers and promotion by rule rather than by favour. A candidate with a realistic view of the odds will often do better aiming here than spending five years on an examination with a sub-one-per-cent pass rate. The reason SSC and railway posts get less attention is that there is less coaching money in them, not that they are lesser careers.
The honest part. Competition is still severe — lakhs of candidates for these posts is routine — and the recruitment cycles are long. Notification to joining can stretch across a year or more, examinations get postponed, results are sometimes delayed by litigation, and candidates need the patience to wait through it while continuing to prepare. Plan for a multi-year process, keep earning while you prepare, and apply across several examinations rather than staking everything on one notification.
