Overview
UI and UX design is the work of deciding how software behaves and how it looks — user research, information architecture, interaction and interface design, prototyping and testing. It sits between design, psychology and product management, and it is one of the few professional fields in India with no required qualification at all.
How you get in. Through a B.Des or a human-computer interaction programme via UCEED or CEED, through a related degree in design, computer science or psychology, or entirely self-taught. Employers hire on portfolio and a design exercise, not on a certificate, and career-changers from engineering, psychology and even teaching move into this field regularly.
What a portfolio actually needs. Not screens. Three or four case studies that show a problem, what you found out about the people who had it, what you tried, what failed, and what changed as a result. A portfolio of attractive interfaces with no reasoning behind them reads as decoration, and reviewers discount it immediately. One deep case study beats ten shallow ones.
The honest part. This field became fashionable, and a very large number of people entered it through short courses at the same time, so the junior end is crowded — more crowded than the advertising for those courses suggests. Junior roles are genuinely scarce relative to applicants, and the ones that exist go to people with real case studies. Treat any programme promising a design job in three months with a loan attached as a sales pitch rather than a route. The field is real, well paid at mid level, and worth entering; the shortcut into it is not.

Common questions
UI and UX design researches user needs and creates understandable, accessible and effective digital interfaces and experiences.
Routes include design, computer applications, technology, psychology or communication degrees, recognised diplomas and strong portfolio-based learning. Eligibility varies.
User research, information architecture, interaction design, visual design, prototyping, accessibility, usability testing, writing and collaboration.
UI designer, UX designer, product designer, interaction designer, UX researcher, design-system specialist and usability roles.
Design is not only making screens attractive. Work involves research, iteration, constraints and feedback. Tool knowledge without design reasoning or an original portfolio is insufficient.
