Overview
Accounting and taxation covers bookkeeping, statutory accounts, audit, GST compliance, income tax filing and payroll. It runs from a one-person practice filing returns for local shops to audit and tax teams inside large firms, and it is one of very few fields on this site with a genuine low-barrier entry alongside a professional one.
Two ways in, and they are very different. The professional route is B.Com plus CA, CMA or CS, which takes years, has low pass rates and leads to audit, corporate finance and practice. The practical route is a short accounting course — Tally, GST filing, basic bookkeeping — which can be started after Class 12 or alongside a degree and finds paid work in small firms and local practices within months. The second route is rarely mentioned in career guidance and is genuinely useful to someone who needs to earn now.
Where the work is. Chartered accountancy firms, company finance and accounts teams, tax consultancies, and independent practice. Every business that registers for GST needs someone to file for it, which makes this one of the most evenly distributed kinds of work in the country — it exists in every town, not only where industry is.
The honest part. Routine bookkeeping is being automated steadily, and data entry into accounting software is not a career on its own any more. What holds value is judgement: knowing which treatment is correct, handling a notice, advising on a structure. Build towards that from the start rather than staying at entry level. And if you begin the CA route, know the pass rates before you begin, and keep a degree running alongside it so that stopping is a change of direction rather than lost years.
