Overview
This covers two related worlds. Agribusiness is the commerce of agriculture — input manufacturing and distribution, procurement, warehousing and cold chain, commodity trading, food supply chains, agri-finance and agri-technology. Agricultural research is the science that sits behind it: crop improvement, soil and water science, plant pathology, entomology, animal science and post-harvest technology.
How you get in. For agribusiness, a B.Sc Agriculture or a commerce or engineering degree followed by an MBA in agribusiness management — the specialised programmes at institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Lucknow and the agricultural universities recruit well and are the strongest commercial route in this field. For research, an M.Sc followed by a PhD, and the Agricultural Research Service examination conducted by ASRB for scientist positions in the ICAR system. NET qualification is the route into university teaching.
Where the work is. Seed, fertiliser, crop protection and farm machinery companies; food processing and FMCG procurement; commodity exchanges and trading houses; banks, NABARD and rural finance institutions; agri-technology and market-linkage startups; ICAR institutes and state agricultural universities; and private research and development in seed and biotechnology.
The honest part. These are two different risk profiles. Agribusiness through a good management programme is a reliable, well-paid commercial career with genuine demand, and it is under-applied for relative to general management because students do not know the specialised programmes exist. Research is the opposite: it is deeply rewarding and the positions are few. The ARS examination fills a small number of scientist posts each year against a large field of qualified candidates, and the path to a permanent research position typically runs through a PhD and several years of project-funded work with no guarantee at the end. Enter research because the work itself is what you want, and keep the teaching and private-sector options in view.

Common questions
Agribusiness connects agricultural production with inputs, finance, processing, markets and supply chains; research improves technologies and practices.
Routes include agriculture, economics, business, statistics or science degrees, followed where useful by agribusiness management or research-focused higher study.
Agricultural awareness, economics, market research, statistics, spreadsheets, supply chains, communication, experimental methods and project management.
Input companies, procurement, commodity operations, rural finance, consulting, agritech, market research, laboratories, universities and policy.
Agribusiness faces climate, price and supply risks. Research roles often require postgraduate training, while enterprise claims must be tested against local economics.
