Overview

About Banking

Banking employs across a wide range: branch operations, credit and lending, relationship management, treasury, risk and compliance, and the regulatory side. The sector splits into public sector banks, private banks, cooperative and regional rural banks, non-banking financial companies, and the Reserve Bank at the top of it.

Two routes, and they lead to different lives. The examination route is IBPS PO and Clerk for most public sector banks, the separate SBI examinations, and RBI Grade B, which is among the most sought-after government positions in the country. Any bachelor degree qualifies; selection is by written examination and interview. The direct route is applying to private banks and NBFCs, typically into sales, relationship or operations roles, often with a B.Com, BBA or MBA.

Where each one takes you. Public sector banking gives security, defined pay scales, pension arrangements and promotion by rule, in exchange for transfers — often to small towns early in the career — and slower pay growth. Private banking pays more at the start and moves faster for people who perform.

The honest part, and it concerns private bank entry roles. A large share of them are sales positions with monthly targets: opening accounts, selling insurance and investment products, meeting numbers. The designation on the card frequently says relationship manager while the job is selling, attrition in these roles is high, and graduates take them expecting a banking career and find a sales career. That is not a reason to refuse the work — it teaches customer handling and product knowledge fast, and people do move from it into credit, operations and management — but go in knowing what the first two years will actually ask of you. If security and a defined path matter more to you than early pay, the examination route is the one to prepare for.
