About Government Teaching
Government teaching runs from primary school to university: primary teachers, trained graduate teachers and post graduate teachers in schools; lecturers in polytechnics and government colleges; and assistant professors in universities. Pay scales are defined, the work is secure, and in most of the country it remains among the most respected employment available to a graduate.
The school route. For primary teaching, a D.El.Ed after Class 12 or a degree with a B.El.Ed. For trained graduate teacher posts, a bachelor degree in the subject plus a B.Ed. For post graduate teacher posts, a master's degree in the subject plus a B.Ed. On top of the qualification sits an eligibility test — CTET for central government schools, or the state TET for state schools. Recruitment then happens separately, through Kendriya Vidyalaya and Navodaya Vidyalaya selections, state education department drives, DSSSB and similar boards, and army and railway school recruitment.
The college and university route. A master's degree followed by UGC NET, or a state SET, for assistant professor eligibility, with a PhD required or strongly preferred for permanent positions. Polytechnic and technical institute lecturer posts run through state technical education recruitment and often want an M.Tech or M.E.
The thing that catches the largest number of people. Passing CTET or a state TET does not give you a job. It is an eligibility certificate, valid for a period, that qualifies you to apply when a recruitment notification appears. Lakhs of people across the country hold a valid TET and no post, because the certificate and the vacancy are two different processes and the second one is irregular. Several states have gone years between recruitment drives, and results have been delayed by litigation more than once. Plan for the qualification and the wait as two separate problems.
The honest part. Check your B.Ed or D.El.Ed college is recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education before you enrol — an unrecognised teacher education degree cannot be used for government recruitment, and colleges have been de-recognised with students already in them. At the university end, the assistant professor route is heavily oversupplied: many NET-qualified candidates spend years in guest and contract lecturer positions that are paid per lecture with no security. Teach in government service because the work is worth doing and the eventual post is genuinely good, but go in with the timeline honestly estimated, and keep earning while you wait for the notification.
