Building and coordinating digital models of a project so that architecture, structure and services resolve on screen before they clash on site - modelling, clash detection, drawing production and data management.

Read this one
Much of the work is production modelling to a foreign client's standard, which is repetitive and offers limited design involvement. Working hours often shift to overlap with client time zones. Indian domestic adoption remains patchy, so the domestic market is thin. Being only a software operator is a weak position - the people who progress understand construction, not just the tool.

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics Required
PCM for architecture or civil engineering.
B.Arch or B.Tech Civil, or a diploma with experience Required
Four or five years. BIM sits on top of design and construction knowledge - a modeller who does not understand buildings produces models that cannot be built.
Learn Revit and the wider BIM toolchain Required
Revit properly, plus Navisworks for clash detection and a common data environment. Certification exists and helps, but demonstrated models matter more.
Work on real projects Required
Modelling, coordination between architectural, structural and services models, and clash resolution. Coordination is the actual value of BIM and it is where the work is.
Learn BIM management, not just modelling Required
Execution plans, standards, level of development, and 4D and 5D BIM for scheduling and costing. This is the step from operator to specialist.
BIM coordinator, then BIM manager Optional
Indian firms serve substantial overseas BIM work, and the Gulf and Western markets recruit Indian BIM professionals directly. It is one of the better-paid routes out of a civil or architecture degree.

What is BIM and why do employers want it?
<p>Building Information Modelling — a coordinated three-dimensional model of a building carrying the data behind every element, rather than a set of separate drawings. Employers want it because clashes between structure, services and architecture get found in the model instead of on site, which saves money that is visible on a project budget.</p>
What should I learn, and in what order?
<p>Revit first, because it is the industry standard in India. Then Navisworks for clash detection and coordination, and an understanding of BIM execution plans and levels of development. Learning the software alone produces a modeller; understanding construction sequencing and services coordination produces a BIM coordinator, which is the role that is actually scarce.</p>
Who hires BIM specialists?
<p>Architecture and engineering consultancies, large contractors, and the design services offices working for overseas clients — the last of these is substantial in India and pays well, because international projects mandate BIM. Government infrastructure projects increasingly require it too.</p>
Is it a good route for a civil or architecture graduate?
<p>It is one of the better ones, because demand has outrun the number of people who genuinely understand it rather than just knowing the software. Draughtsmen and diploma holders also move into it successfully. The caution is the same as for any tool-based skill: the model is the deliverable, but the value is in knowing whether the model is right.</p>
