The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
Class 10 Required
Entry for the ITI draughtsman trades.
ITI Draughtsman Mechanical, or a related trade such as Draughtsman Plastic Mould Required
Two years. The mould and tooling trades combine drawing with an understanding of how the part is actually manufactured, which is a genuinely valuable pairing.
Apprenticeship in a design office or tool room Required
One year, ending in the National Apprenticeship Certificate.
Model and detail components Required
3D modelling, 2D detailing with GD&T, and bills of material. Understanding tolerances and how the part will be made is what separates a technician from a tracer.
Add CAM or simulation Required
CAM programming, or basic FEA and mould flow. Either widens you from drawing into engineering support.
Design technician, or move into tool or product design Optional
Senior technician grades, or a move into design with a part-time diploma behind you.
