The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
A clinical qualification and registration Required
You cannot own and run a clinical practice on someone else's licence. BAMS, BHMS, BDS, MBBS, BPT or another registered qualification, with current registration in the state you will practise in.
Work for someone else first Required
Three to five years employed or as a visiting practitioner. You learn patient flow, pricing, what equipment actually gets used and how a clinic loses money, none of which is taught in a degree.
Register the clinical establishment Required
Registration under the Clinical Establishments Act or your state's equivalent, plus biomedical waste authorisation, fire clearance, and a pollution control consent where applicable. Pharmacy and radiology on site each need their own licence. Start this well before you plan to open.
Set up premises, equipment and records Required
Lease, fit-out, equipment and a patient record system that will satisfy an inspection. Under-spend on decor and do not under-spend on records.
Build the patient base Required
Referrals from local practitioners, presence in the neighbourhood, and online listings. Expect twelve to eighteen months before the clinic is reliably busy, and plan the finances for that gap rather than hoping.
Add practitioners or a second location Optional
Growth means employing others and becoming a manager rather than a clinician. It is worth deciding whether that is actually what you want.
