The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1

Class 10 Required

Entry for the ITI machining trades.

2
1-2 years

ITI Machinist, Turner, or Advanced CNC Machining Required

One to two years. Conventional machining first is genuinely worth it - understanding speeds, feeds and how a tool cuts makes you far better on a CNC than someone who only ever pressed cycle start.

3
1 year

Apprenticeship in a machine shop Required

One year with a registered employer, ending in the National Apprenticeship Certificate.

4
2-3 years

Operate production machines Required

Setting work, tool offsets, running batches and holding tolerance across a shift. Inspection discipline and knowing when a tool is going blunt are what the job actually rewards.

5
1-2 years

Learn setting, not just operating Required

Setter grade is the real step up - fixturing, tool selection, first-off approval and correcting the programme at the machine. Operators are replaceable; setters are not.

6

Move to programming or multi-axis work Optional

G-code and CAM programming, or five-axis and turn-mill machines. Both change what you are worth considerably.
