Learn compositing Required
Nuke is the industry standard; After Effects for motion and broadcast work. A VFX course or focused self-teaching both work.
Understand the theory, not just the nodes Required
Colour space, linear workflow, premultiplication, keying, despill and integration. Compositors who only know where buttons are get stuck at junior grade permanently.
Build a reel with breakdowns Required
Show the layers and the node tree. A compositing reel without breakdowns is assumed to be someone else's work.
Work in a studio Required
Junior compositor on shot work - cleanup, keying, integration - then more complex shots as you are trusted. Feedback rounds are constant and impersonal; do not take them personally.
Senior compositor, then compositing supervisor Optional
Supervisors handle the hardest shots and set the methodology for the show. It is one of the better-paid VFX tracks.
