Class 12, any stream Required
Psychology at Class 12 helps but is not required.
BA or B.Sc in Psychology Required
Three years. Understand the landscape early: "counsellor" is not a protected title in India and anyone may use it, while "clinical psychologist" is protected and requires RCI registration. Which you intend to be changes your entire route.
Take a master's Required
MA or M.Sc in Psychology or Counselling Psychology, or an MSW for the social work route. Two years.
Get supervised practice Required
Supervised counselling hours through an internship or a placement. Practising without supervision early is where real harm is done, to clients and to your own development.
Decide between counselling and clinical practice Required
Counselling psychology work - schools, colleges, workplaces, NGOs and private practice - proceeds from here. Clinical psychology, which is diagnosis and psychotherapy for mental illness, requires an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology or its recognised successor and RCI registration. That route is separate, more competitive and legally distinct.
Build a practice, or specialise Optional
School counselling, career counselling, marital and family work, or trauma. Continued supervision and personal therapy are the professional norms and worth maintaining.

What it pays
Indicative bands.
| Stage | Pay band | What changes |

These are ranges, not offers. Pay varies by city, employer size, sector and your own skill more than by job title. Treat the band as the shape of the market, not as a number you can hold anyone to.
