An ITI trade producing the technical drawings that construction and manufacturing work from, now almost entirely through CAD software.
- Route in
- Typically ITI Draughtsman (Civil). 1 course lead here
- Entrance
- SSC Junior Engineer (JE)
What the work involves
Day to day
Turning an engineer's sketches and calculations into precise technical drawings - plans, sections, elevations and component details - that a site or a workshop can build from. The work is done in CAD software, and a drawing that is ambiguous or wrong costs real money downstream.
Who this suits
Fit
Precise people with good spatial sense who want technical office work rather than site or shop-floor work. Consultancies, contractors and manufacturers all need drafting, the software skills transfer between industries, and there is steady overseas demand, particularly in the Gulf.
The honest reality
Read this one
Manual drafting is gone; CAD ability is the job, so an institute still teaching mostly by hand is teaching you very little. Routine drafting is increasingly automated and outsourced, which puts pressure on rates at the simple end of the work. Pay is modest and progression means moving into BIM, detailing or a diploma - drafting alone has a low ceiling.
The route in, step by step

Class 10 Required
Entry for either ITI draughtsman trade.
ITI Draughtsman Civil or Draughtsman Mechanical Required
Two years. Civil leads to buildings and infrastructure; mechanical leads to machine and component drawing. Both are two years and the skills transfer only partly.
Apprenticeship Required
One year, ending in the National Apprenticeship Certificate. Public sector engineering organisations take draughtsman apprentices and often recruit from them.
Work in a drawing office Required
Detailing, revisions, drawing registers and coordination between disciplines. You learn the standards and the discipline of controlled revisions.
Prepare for SSC JE or a state junior engineer examination Required
Junior engineer recruitment is the main route from draughtsman to a permanent government engineering post. Most notifications require a diploma, so plan a part-time diploma alongside.
Junior engineer, or senior draughtsman in the private sector Optional
The government route gives security and slow progression; the private route pays more sooner and rewards BIM and 3D skills.

Common questions
The ones people actually ask about this work.
Is manual drawing still worth learning?
The job is CAD. An institute still teaching mostly by hand is a warning sign, because that training will not make you employable.
What separates civil from mechanical draughtsman?
Civil covers buildings, layouts and site drawings; mechanical covers components and assemblies. The software overlaps but the conventions and standards differ.
Is there overseas demand for draughtsmen?
Yes, particularly in Gulf construction. CAD skills transfer directly, though contracts are project-based and follow regional construction cycles.
How do I move beyond drafting?
BIM, detailing, or a diploma leading to technician and supervisory roles. Drafting alone has a low ceiling and growing automation pressure.
