Be at least 18 and hold a learner's licence Required
The learner's licence comes first, after a simple test on road signs and rules.
Get a light motor vehicle licence Required
Learn on a car or light commercial vehicle and pass the RTO test. This is the foundation and there is no way around it.
Hold the LMV licence for a year Required
A statutory waiting period before a heavy vehicle licence. Use the year to drive commercially on a light vehicle - delivery or taxi work builds the road hours that make heavy training easier.
Complete heavy vehicle training Required
At a recognised or accredited driving training centre. Accredited centres run a structured syllabus and can exempt you from the RTO test on completion.
Obtain the transport licence and badge Required
HMV or HTV endorsement, medical certificate, and a public service vehicle badge if you intend to drive passengers. Each is a separate application.
