The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
Class 10, then ITI Electrician Required
The trade foundation. Some contractors come in through a diploma in electrical engineering instead, which shortens the licence route.
Apprenticeship and site experience Required
You need real years on installations before the licensing board will consider you, and before you can price a job without losing money on it.
Obtain a Wireman's Permit, then a Supervisor's Certificate of Competency Required
Both from the state Electrical Licensing Board, each with its own experience requirement and examination. The supervisor's certificate is the one that matters here - a contractor's licence requires that either you or an employee holds it.
Apply for the Electrical Contractor's Licence Required
Granted by the same board. You will need the supervisor's certificate, a list of tools and testing equipment, premises, and in most states a financial guarantee. Licences are graded by the voltage and value of work they permit.
Register for work Required
Empanelment with the state PWD, the discom or local builders is how most contractors get their first jobs. Government empanelment is slow to obtain and steady once you have it.
Grow the licence grade and the business Optional
Higher licence grades permit higher-voltage and higher-value work. The constraint on growth is usually working capital and reliable wiremen, not the licence.
