The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1

Class 10 Required

Entry for the ITI trade. Fitter is the most widely taken ITI trade in India, so admission is competitive on marks.

2
2 years

ITI Fitter Required

Two years under the Craftsman Training Scheme - marking, filing, drilling, assembly, fits and tolerances, and measuring instruments.

3
1 year

Apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act Required

One year with a registered employer, ending in a National Apprenticeship Certificate. PSU and railway recruitment weight the NAC heavily, so this is the step that decides whether the government route stays open.

4
2-3 years

Work in assembly or maintenance Required

Machine assembly, alignment, bearing and seal work, and breakdown repair. Precision measurement is what separates a fitter people trust from one they supervise.

5
1-2 years

Sit PSU and railway examinations Optional

RRB technician grades, and PSU trade apprentice and technician recruitment. Steady pay, pension and transfers - a different life from private plant work, and worth attempting early while you are exam-fit.

6

Senior fitter, or specialise Optional

Hydraulics, pneumatics, precision alignment or maintenance planning. Specialisation is what stops a fitter's pay flattening after ten years.
