What the work involves
Day to day
You diagnose and manage illness in adults across a very wide range: infections, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, respiratory and cardiac complaints. Most of your day is consultation, examination and interpreting investigations, punctuated by ward rounds if you are attached to a hospital. You are the doctor who works out what is wrong before anyone specialises.
Who this suits
Fit
People who like breadth over depth, and who enjoy the detective work of an unclear presentation. You need to be comfortable holding uncertainty, because many patients arrive with vague symptoms and no obvious diagnosis. Strong communication matters more than most students expect.

The training is long: MBBS, then a postgraduate degree, then often a super-speciality. Government hospital posts carry heavy patient loads and limited time per consultation. Private practice takes years to build. Many general physicians describe the first decade as financially unremarkable compared with peers who left for other fields, with the payoff arriving later.

Clear NEET PG Required

MD General Medicine Required
Three years as a junior resident - wards, intensive care, emergency and outpatients, with a thesis alongside. The workload is heavy and the exposure is broad.
Senior residency Required
Three years of supervised independent practice. This is where you become someone a hospital would let run a unit.
Practise as a physician Required
Consultant physician in a hospital, or your own practice. General medicine remains the backbone of Indian hospital care and the demand is steady everywhere, not only in metros.
Super-speciality through NEET SS Optional

What does an MD in General Medicine lead to?
<p>Practice as a physician — diagnosing and managing the wide range of adult illness that does not need surgery — and it is the gateway to most medical super-specialities through DM, including cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology and endocrinology. It is one of the most sought-after PG branches for exactly that reason.</p>
Is it a good choice if I want a super-speciality?
<p>It is the standard route, and it also means a longer road: three years of MD, then a competitive DM entrance, then three more years. Plan for the full length rather than the next step. If a particular super-speciality is the goal, find out early which base qualification it requires, since not all run through general medicine.</p>
What is the work like?
<p>Broad and cognitively demanding — you see everything from diabetes and hypertension to complex undiagnosed illness, and the skill is in reasoning through presentations rather than performing procedures. Ward and emergency duty, night calls and long hours are part of it throughout training and often afterwards.</p>
What if I stop at MD Medicine?
<p>It is a complete and respected career on its own. Consultant physician posts in hospitals, private practice, and a strong position in general and critical care medicine. A substantial number of physicians never super-specialise and practise successfully for decades.</p>
