The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1

Class 8 or above, and be at least 18 Required

Formal education requirements are minimal. Some states set a schooling requirement for a transport licence, so check locally.

2
1 year

Get a light motor vehicle licence and hold it Required

You must have held an LMV licence for at least one year before you can apply for a heavy vehicle licence. Plan around that year - it is the fixed cost of entering this trade.

3
1-3 months

Train at a recognised heavy vehicle driving school Required

Training from a government-recognised or accredited driver training centre is required. Accredited centres can also exempt you from the RTO driving test, which removes a common bottleneck.

4
1-2 months

Obtain the HMV or HTV licence and endorsements Required

Apply at the RTO with medical fitness certification. Add a hazardous goods endorsement if you intend to carry them - it requires separate training and it pays more.

5
2-3 years

Drive for a fleet operator Required

Start with an established transport company rather than owner-driver work. You get scheduled routes, maintained vehicles and a record of employment that later matters.

6

Specialise, or move to owner-driver Optional

Tankers, trailers, container haulage or heavy equipment transport all pay above general goods. Buying your own vehicle is a financing decision more than a driving one.
