A qualifying degree Required
MBBS, BDS, an AYUSH degree, B.Sc Nursing or another health science degree for the clinical route into MHA. Some programmes admit any graduate; the strongest ones do not.
Work clinically first, if you are a clinician Optional
A year or two of clinical work makes you far more credible to the doctors you will later have to manage. Administrators who have never worked a ward struggle to be taken seriously.
Master of Hospital Administration Required
Two years, entered through an institutional entrance. AIIMS, PGIMER, TISS and the larger private schools run the recognised programmes. An MBA in healthcare management is the alternative route.
Complete the hospital residency or internship Required
MHA programmes include substantial supervised hospital placement. This is where you learn how a hospital actually runs, as opposed to how it is described.
Work in hospital operations Required
Quality, patient services, operations, or a functional department. NABH accreditation work is the standard proving ground for a young administrator.
Medical superintendent or CEO track Optional
Deputy and then medical superintendent in a government hospital, or the operations-to-CEO route in a private chain.

Who can do hospital administration?
<p>Both doctors and non-doctors, which is what makes it worth knowing about. An MHA or an MBA in healthcare management is the usual route, entered from medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied health, life sciences or general management. Doctors move into it for the shift from clinical to organisational work; non-doctors enter it as a management career in a sector that keeps growing.</p>
