ITI Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician Required
Two years - the refrigeration cycle, compressors, brazing, charging, electricals and controls.
Apprenticeship with a service company or manufacturer Required
One year. Manufacturer service networks train to their own standards and that training is portable.
Install and service domestic and light commercial systems Required
Split and window units, then VRF and package systems. Correct evacuation, charging and leak testing are where most field failures originate.
Learn refrigerant handling and central systems Required
Refrigerant recovery and handling rules, chillers, cooling towers, ducting and building management systems. Central plant is a step change in both complexity and pay.
Supervisor, or your own service business Optional
Site supervision on projects, an annual maintenance contract business, or the Gulf route where HVAC technicians are consistently in demand.
