One year. Refineries, fertiliser plants, pharma and power stations all take instrumentation apprentices, and the plant you train in tends to determine your industry.

Calibration and loop checking Required

Instrument calibration against traceable standards, loop testing, and documentation that will survive an audit. In regulated industries the record is as important as the reading.

Move into control systems Required

DCS and PLC systems, control valve maintenance, and safety instrumented systems. This is where instrumentation stops being maintenance and becomes engineering.

Senior technician or instrumentation supervisor Optional

Shutdown planning, contractor supervision and calibration programme ownership. A diploma helps for the supervisor grade.
