ITI in Fitter, Electrician, or a plant trade such as Pump Operator cum Mechanic Required
One to two years. Maintenance draws from several trades, and the multi-skilled technician is the one plants keep.
Apprenticeship in a plant Required
One year, ending in the National Apprenticeship Certificate.
Work on breakdowns and preventive schedules Required
Pumps, motors, gearboxes, compressors and conveyors. You learn the plant by fixing it, and the second skill is knowing which failure can wait until the shutdown.
Add a second trade and condition monitoring Required
A mechanical technician who can also handle basic electrical work, or vibration and thermography for predictive maintenance. Both raise your value sharply.
Maintenance supervisor or planner Optional
Running shutdowns, spares planning and the maintenance schedule. A part-time diploma is what most plants expect before promoting into planning.
