The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1
2 years

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology Required

PCB is the entry for both the diploma and the degree.

2
2-4 years

DMLT or B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Technology Required

The diploma is two years and gets you working sooner. The degree is three years plus internship and is what you need for supervisory posts and for going abroad. Choose deliberately - upgrading later costs more time than doing the degree first.

3

Register with your state paramedical or allied health council Required

Where the state has constituted one under the Allied and Healthcare Professions Act. Several have not yet, and in those states employers rely on the qualification alone for now.

4
2-3 years

Work in a diagnostic laboratory Required

Hospital labs, standalone diagnostic chains or blood banks. You rotate through haematology, biochemistry, microbiology and pathology, and you find out quickly which one suits you.

5
1-2 years

Specialise Optional

Histopathology, molecular diagnostics, blood banking or cytogenetics. Molecular has grown fastest and is where the technician role is changing most.

6

Senior technologist, or lab management Optional

M.Sc in MLT leads to teaching and to quality management roles. NABL accreditation work is a distinct and well-paid specialism in itself.
