Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology Required
The science base for occupational therapy.
Bachelor of Occupational Therapy Required
Four and a half years including a six-month internship. Mental health is a posting within the degree, and it is where you find out whether this is your field.
Register with your state council Required
Occupational therapy is coming under statutory registration through the Allied and Healthcare Professions Act. Association membership with AIOTA is separate and is what most employers currently check.
Work in a psychiatric setting Required
Psychiatric hospitals, de-addiction centres, child guidance clinics or community mental health programmes. The work is function and participation, not symptoms - that distinction is the whole discipline.
Master of Occupational Therapy in mental health Required
Two years. Required for most senior clinical and all academic posts, and it is where vocational rehabilitation and psychosocial models are taught properly.
Lead a programme or teach Optional
Running a psychosocial rehabilitation service, or faculty in an OT college. Community mental health programmes are expanding and are short of trained OTs.
