What the work involves

Day to day

General purpose crew work covering both deck and engine departments - watchkeeping, mooring and cargo operations, cleaning and chipping, painting, and assisting with machinery maintenance. It is physical work carried out on a moving vessel in all weather.

Who this suits

Fit

Class 10 holders who want to go to sea and earn considerably more than shore work at the same qualification level. No degree is needed, training is short compared with officer routes, and experienced ratings can work towards officer certificates over time.

The honest reality

Read this one

The institute must be approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, and this needs saying plainly: the sector has a long record of unapproved institutes taking large fees for training that cannot be used to get a job at sea. Verify approval independently before paying anything. Medical and eyesight standards are strict. Contracts mean months away with limited contact, and the isolation affects people more than the work does. Berth availability follows shipping cycles, so training does not guarantee a ship.

The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1

Class 10 with the required marks Required

Class 10 with a minimum aggregate and a specified mark in English, plus an age limit that is genuinely enforced. Medical and eyesight standards apply.

2
6 months

Complete DG Shipping approved pre-sea training Required

Six months at an approved institute. Verify approval on the DG Shipping list yourself - fraudulent institutes and agents target this entry route specifically because candidates are young and unadvised.

3
1-2 months

Get your seafarer documents Required

STCW certificates, INDoS number, CDC and seafarer medical.

4
2-3 years

Join a ship as a rating Required

General Purpose ratings work across deck and engine departments - maintenance, watchkeeping support, mooring and cargo. Contracts of six to nine months.

5
3-5 years

Advance to Able Seafarer Required

Documented sea service plus the required certification. Ratings progress to Able Seafarer Deck or Engine, then to Bosun or Fitter.

6

Upgrade towards officer rank Optional

Ratings with sea service can qualify for officer certification through defined routes. It is longer than the cadet route and it is real - several serving officers came this way.

Common questions

The ones people actually ask about this work.

How do I check that an institute is genuine?

Verify Directorate General of Shipping approval with the regulator directly, not with the institute. Unapproved training cannot be used to get a job at sea.

What are the medical requirements?

Strict, including eyesight and general fitness, and assessed before training begins. Establish that you qualify before paying any fees at all.

Can a rating become an officer later?

Yes, through further certificates of competency and accumulated sea time. It is a longer route than the officer degrees but a real one.

How long are the contracts at sea?

Typically several months aboard followed by leave. The separation and confined living are what people underestimate, more than the work itself.
