The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology Required
Or the GNM route, which starts from the same Class 12 science base.
B.Sc Nursing, or GNM followed by Post Basic B.Sc Required
Both reach the same place. GNM is three years and gets you earning sooner; the Post Basic B.Sc afterwards is two years and is what opens supervision.
Register with your State Nursing Council Required
RN RM registration before you can be employed.
Work as a staff nurse Required
Supervision is promoted from within almost everywhere. Three to five years on the ward, with a clean record and a reputation for handling difficult shifts, is the usual qualification.
Move up to ward sister or supervisor Required
You take responsibility for the duty roster, stock, incident reporting and the junior nurses on your shift. The clinical work does not stop; the accountability is what changes.
Add a management qualification Optional
A Post Basic B.Sc for GNM holders, or a diploma in hospital administration, is what separates a supervisor who stays a supervisor from one who moves into nursing administration.
