Class 10 Required
Entry for the ITI trade.
ITI Fitter, or the Plumber trade Required
Fitter is the broader base for industrial pipe work. Plumber is one year and suits building services rather than plant.
Apprenticeship on a plant or construction site Required
One year. Refinery, fertiliser and power projects are where industrial pipe fitting is learned.
Learn isometric drawings and fabrication Required
Reading isometrics, spool fabrication, fit-up for welding, alignment and bolt torquing. Fit-up quality decides whether the weld passes radiography, which is why fitters are held responsible for it.
Add welding, or work on projects Required
A welding ticket alongside pipe fitting makes you significantly more employable. Project and shutdown work pays well and is intermittent by nature.
Chargehand or piping supervisor, or work in the Gulf Optional
Supervision on site, or overseas contracts, which pay several times Indian rates and generally require a trade test on arrival.
