Platform gig work (delivery and ride)

Last updated · Confirm dates, fees and eligibility on the official website before you apply.

Delivery and ride work through an app, using your own vehicle. Money starts within days of joining, which is why it is often the right immediate answer - and the earnings quoted to you are gross, before everything you pay for.

What this is

Understand the role

Delivery or ride work dispatched by an app, using your own bike, cycle or car. It is on this site for one honest reason: money starts within days of joining, with no qualification and no interview. If you need income this month, this and private tuition are the two realistic answers.

If you would rather have employed work in a store or warehouse, with a fixed wage rather than per-order pay, see Retail, warehouse and delivery operations instead — it is a different arrangement.

What the work is

Day to day

Accepting orders, riding, waiting at restaurants, and dealing with customers and traffic for as long as you choose to stay online. Earnings concentrate in meal and commute peaks, so the hours that pay are not the hours you would choose.

Who it suits

Fit

People who need income immediately and can start on Monday. It is a genuinely good bridge — while studying, between jobs, while a business or a channel is being built. It is a poor destination, because there is no progression in it and the body wears.

What you need

Capability

A licence and a vehicle for bike and car work, a phone with data, and the documents the platform asks for. Some cities have cycle and on-foot roles that need neither licence nor motor vehicle. Rented bikes are available and are usually a bad deal once you count the daily rent against what you keep.

How to start

Preparation

Register directly with the platform, never through an agent charging a fee. Work a full week before drawing conclusions, and write down fuel, food and any repair against what you were paid. That number — not the app's total — is your income. Then decide whether the hours are worth it.

What people get wrong

Read this one

Advertised earnings are gross. Out of them come fuel, vehicle EMI if you bought on credit, servicing, tyres, phone data and your own food. What is left is often far below the figure on the poster, and nobody calculates it before starting.

Also: incentive structures are set by the platform and change without notice, so a rate that made the week work can disappear. And there is no employment protection here — no leave, no notice, and an injury means no income at all.

How it fails

Read this one

Not suddenly — by staying. It is fine as a bridge and hard as a decade: earnings do not rise with experience, incentives tend to tighten over time, and the physical cost accumulates.

The version that fails badly is buying a vehicle on credit for it. The EMI is fixed and the earnings are not, and when incentives change the loan does not. Ride a rented or owned vehicle until you know your real weekly figure, and keep something else moving alongside — a trade, a certificate, an exam.

The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1

Be at least 18 with a valid driving licence Required

A licence appropriate to the vehicle, and for ride-hailing a commercial licence and badge where your state requires them.

2
1-2 months

Arrange a vehicle Required

Own, financed or rented. Read finance terms carefully - vehicle loans taken on optimistic earnings projections are the main way gig workers end up trapped.

3
2-4 weeks

Onboard with the platforms Required

Documents, background verification and app training. Registering with two or three platforms rather than one gives you leverage and cushions demand swings.

4
3-6 months

Learn how earnings actually work Required

Peak hours, surge, incentive slabs and acceptance ratings. Calculate net of fuel, maintenance, insurance and EMI - the advertised figures are gross and the gap is large.

5
1-3 months

Protect yourself Required

Health and accident insurance, vehicle servicing, and registration on the e-Shram portal for social security schemes. Platforms do not provide employment benefits and the gap is yours to cover.

6

Use it as a bridge, or build a fleet Optional

Steady immediate income makes this a good bridge while studying or between jobs. The genuine growth route is owning several vehicles and putting other drivers on them.

Common questions

The ones people actually ask about this work.

How much do delivery and ride partners actually earn?

Less than the advertised figure, and the gap matters. Platform earnings are quoted gross — before fuel, vehicle EMI, servicing, tyres, insurance and phone data, all of which you pay. They also usually assume peak-hour working and incentive targets being met. Calculate your own net per hour after a fortnight of real work and decide on that number, not the one on the poster.

Is gig work a good option?

It is a genuinely good immediate answer: money starts within days, there is no interview and no qualification, and the hours are yours. It is a poor long-term one: no employer, no provident fund, no paid leave, no increment, and earnings that fall as more riders join. Use it to earn while you build something else, and set a date to review whether you still are.

What should I watch out for?

Vehicle costs eating the income, particularly if you took a loan for the vehicle to do this work. Incentive structures changing without notice, which they do. Accident risk, which is real and largely uninsured — get personal accident cover, because the platform's cover is usually limited. And the hours spent waiting between orders, which are unpaid and rarely counted when people estimate their earnings.

Is there anything better within the same work?

Yes. Regular contracts with a single restaurant, shop or distributor often pay better per hour and are more predictable than app work. Larger vehicles and commercial licences open goods transport, which pays considerably more. And the customer knowledge you build doing deliveries is a real asset if you eventually run your own delivery service for local businesses.
