Learn print production properly Required
Colour separation, CMYK and spot colours, trapping, bleed, imposition and plate making. Print has rules that screen design does not, and prepress is where files get fixed.
Work in a press or prepress bureau Required
Preparing customer files, proofing and plate output. You become the person who catches the mistake before ten thousand copies are printed wrong.
Learn colour management Required
ICC profiles, calibration and proofing standards. Colour management is a genuine specialism and packaging clients pay for it.
Prepress in-charge, or move to packaging Optional
Running prepress for a press, or moving into packaging design and production, where the technical demands and the pay are both higher.
