ITI Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician Required
Two years - the refrigeration cycle, compressors, brazing, charging, electricals and controls.
Apprenticeship with a service company or manufacturer Required
One year. Manufacturer service networks train to their own standards and that training travels with you.
Install and service domestic and light commercial systems Required
Split and window units, then VRF and package systems. Correct evacuation, charging and leak testing are where most field failures actually originate.
Learn refrigerant handling and central plant Required
Refrigerant recovery rules, chillers, cooling towers, ducting and building management systems. Central plant is a step change in both complexity and pay.

Is air conditioning repair seasonal work?
<p>Largely, yes. Demand peaks sharply in summer and falls away afterwards, and the trade's income follows it. Technicians who do well plan for that: annual maintenance contracts spread income across the year, and adding refrigeration work — cold storage, commercial refrigeration, water coolers — keeps the off-season busier.</p>
What qualification do I need?
<p>An ITI in refrigeration and air conditioning, or a short skill course, plus practical experience. Handling refrigerant gases properly matters both for the work and for safety, and manufacturers run their own training for their equipment which is worth taking when offered.</p>
Can I run my own AC service business?
<p>It is one of the more achievable trades to go independent in. Start-up cost is a gauge set, vacuum pump, recovery equipment and hand tools, and customers are local and repeat annually. Annual maintenance contracts with housing societies, offices and shops are the foundation of a stable business here.</p>
Is the work growing?
