The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1
3-4 years

Class 12, then a degree or diploma in engineering Required

Most state Factories Rules prescribe a degree or diploma in engineering or technology as the base qualification for a Safety Officer.

2
1 year

Take the Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety Required

One year, from an institute recognised by your state factory inspectorate. The Factories Act requires factories above a prescribed size to appoint a qualified Safety Officer, and the state rules name the acceptable qualifications. Verify recognition before enrolling - this is where candidates waste a year.

3
3-6 months

Add international certification Required

NEBOSH IGC, and IOSH. These are what multinational sites and Gulf employers ask for by name, and they travel where the state diploma does not.

4
2-4 years

Work in safety on a site Required

Risk assessment, permit-to-work, incident investigation, training and statutory returns. You need enough standing to stop work, which is earned rather than granted.

5
2-4 years

Take the statutory Safety Officer post Required

Appointed under the Factories Act, with defined duties and legal responsibilities. You report on safety independently of production pressure, which is the whole point of the role.

6

EHS manager, or consultancy Optional

Environment, health and safety leadership across a site or group, or independent safety consultancy and auditing.
