The trade base. A diploma in electrical engineering also feeds this role and starts you a grade higher.

2
3 months

Solar-specific certification Required

Suryamitra or SCGJ. Utility-scale operators recruit almost entirely from certified candidates.

3
1-2 years

Join a plant operations team Required

Utility-scale plants are usually remote, and rosters are long shifts with accommodation on site. Know that before you accept, because it is the main reason people leave.

4
2-3 years

Learn monitoring and preventive maintenance Required

SCADA and monitoring platforms, string current analysis, thermography, cleaning cycles and inverter servicing. Generation loss is measured continuously and traced back to you.

High-voltage and substation exposure Optional

Plant switchyards, transformers and the evacuation line. High-voltage work needs separate authorisation and is what lifts you out of the panel field.
