The examination is competitive with few vacancies and requires serious statistical preparation. Government work is procedural and slow, and progression is seniority-driven. Official statistics in India have periodically been the subject of political controversy over release and methodology, which is uncomfortable for people who joined for the integrity of the numbers. Private sector data science pays considerably more.

Class 12 with Mathematics Required
Mathematics is required for the eligible degrees.
A degree in Statistics, Mathematics or Economics Required
Three or four years. The Indian Statistical Service examination requires a bachelor's degree with statistics as a subject, or a master's in statistics - check the exact wording, because it is enforced.
Take a master's in Statistics Required
Two years. ISI, Delhi School of Economics and the strong university departments. It strengthens both the examination attempt and every alternative route.
Prepare for the Indian Statistical Service examination Required
Conducted by UPSC, with statistics papers and general studies. Vacancies are small and the paper is genuinely technical, which keeps competition narrower than the civil services.
Join the service, or an alternative institution Required

What are the government statistical services?
<p>The Indian Statistical Service, recruited through a UPSC examination, and statistical posts at the Reserve Bank, the National Statistical Office and other ministries. The work is designing surveys, producing and validating official statistics, and analysis that feeds policy — the numbers the country actually runs on.</p>
What qualification is required?
<p>A degree with statistics, mathematics, economics or operations research, depending on the specific recruitment. The Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi School of Economics and the better university statistics departments are the recognised routes, and the ISS examination is technically demanding rather than general.</p>
Why is statistics described as under-supplied?
<p>Because far fewer students take it than take engineering or commerce, while demand for people who genuinely understand sampling, inference and study design has risen everywhere — government, banking, research, analytics and pharmaceuticals. A statistics graduate competes in a much smaller field than a general science graduate does.</p>
What are the options outside government?
<p>Analytics and data science, market research, pharmaceutical biostatistics which is a specialised and well-paid niche, risk modelling in banking and insurance, and academic research. The statistical training transfers directly into data roles, and it is a stronger foundation for them than a short data science course is.</p>
