The route in, step by step

6 steps from where you are now.

1
2-4 years

Start acting wherever you can Required

School and college theatre, local groups and street theatre. Stage time from an early stage is the foundation.

2
3-4 years

Train formally Required

The National School of Drama, a Bachelor of Performing Arts, or a recognised theatre training programme. NSD admission is highly competitive and its training is a genuine career transformer.

3
2-4 years

Join a repertory or a working group Required

Regular ensemble work is how craft is built - voice, movement, text and the discipline of rehearsal over months.

4

Accept that theatre alone rarely pays Required

Very few Indian theatre artists live on stage work. Teaching, voiceover, screen acting, corporate theatre and workshops are how the work is funded. This is the profession as it is, not a failure of it.

5
2-5 years

Widen into screen and voice work Required

Television, film, web series, advertising and voiceover. Theatre training is well regarded by casting directors and is a genuine advantage.

6

Direct, teach, or run a group Optional

Direction, drama education in schools, or running your own theatre group - which is an arts administration job as much as an artistic one.
