The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
Class 12, and preferably a degree Required
History, archaeology or tourism degrees help, and the Ministry of Tourism guide training generally requires a graduate qualification.
Learn your region deeply Required
History, architecture, religion and local context. Guiding is storytelling built on real knowledge, and tourists can tell the difference within ten minutes.
Take the Regional Level Guide training and licence Required
The Ministry of Tourism runs the Regional Level Guide programme through IITTM, with selection, training and examination. States license their own guides separately. Guiding at protected monuments without a licence is prohibited, so this is the gate, not a credential.
Add a foreign language Required
French, Spanish, German, Japanese or Mandarin. Foreign-language guides earn several times what English-language guides do, and the shortage is persistent.
Work with operators and build a reputation Required
Inbound tour operators, hotels and cruise shore excursions. The work is seasonal and reviews carry you into the next season.
Specialise, or run your own tours Optional
Heritage, wildlife, food or photography tours. Independent guides with a specialism and an online presence now bypass operators entirely.

What it pays
Indicative bands.

|---|---|---|
| Any experience | ₹10,000 – ₹19,000 / monthly | Varies by employer |
These are ranges, not offers. Pay varies by city, employer size, sector and your own skill more than by job title. Treat the band as the shape of the market, not as a number you can hold anyone to.
