2 years

ITI in Electrician or Wireman Required

Two years for Electrician, two for Wireman, under the Craftsman Training Scheme. Check the institute is NCVT or SCVT affiliated - the certificate is what the licensing board will later ask to see.

1 year

Apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act Required

One year with a registered employer, paid, ending in a National Apprenticeship Certificate. Do this. It is the qualifying experience the licensing board counts, and it is what PSU recruitment asks for.

3-6 months

Apply for a Wireman's Permit Required

Issued by your state Electrical Licensing Board under the state Electricity Rules, on the strength of your ITI certificate plus the required experience, and usually an oral examination. Without it you cannot lawfully carry out electrical installation work for hire.

2-3 years

Work on installations Required

Domestic and commercial wiring, distribution boards, earthing and testing. Work under a licensed supervisor at first - the permit lets you do the work, experience is what makes you good at it.

2-4 years

Move up to a Supervisor's Certificate of Competency Optional

The next rung on the same ladder, needing more years and a further examination. It is what lets you certify installations and is the prerequisite for a contractor's licence later.
