What this is
Understand the role
Teaching yoga — asana, breathing and practice — to groups or individuals in studios, gyms, schools, workplaces, wellness centres, retreats or your own classes. India's certification for it is structured nationally, and Indian teachers are sought after abroad.
What the work is
Day to day
Teaching classes at fixed times, mostly early morning and evening; adapting practice for beginners, older students and people with injuries or conditions; and, if you work for yourself, finding and keeping students. Many instructors combine studio classes with corporate wellness sessions and private clients.
What you need
Capability
Certification through the Yoga Certification Board scheme, which certifies at defined levels from instructor upwards, or a diploma or degree in yoga from a recognised university. Serious teaching also expects real grounding in anatomy and contraindications — knowing which students should not be doing a given posture is the professional part of this work.
What people get wrong
Read this one
Treating a short teacher training course as sufficient. Studios and international employers increasingly ask which certification you hold and at what level, and the well-paid work — corporate programmes, retreats, teaching abroad — goes to properly certified teachers.
The other misconception is that this is light work. Teaching several classes a day is physically demanding, and instructors get injured through demonstrating repeatedly rather than through practising.
The route in, step by step
6 steps from where you are now.
Class 12, any stream Required
Open entry. Personal practice matters more than any prior qualification.
Build a serious personal practice Required
One to two years of consistent practice under a teacher before training to teach. Teaching from a shallow practice is obvious to students immediately.
Certify through the Yoga Certification Board Required
The Ministry of Ayush board certifies at graded levels - Yoga Volunteer, Yoga Protocol Instructor, then Yoga Wellness Instructor. Government and institutional posts specify these levels by name.
Teach general classes Required
Studios, gyms, schools, residential societies or corporate sessions. Learning to teach a mixed-ability room safely is the core skill.
Advance the certification Required
Yoga Teacher and Evaluator level, or a diploma or degree in yoga from a recognised university. This opens institutional and government teaching posts.
Specialise, or teach independently Optional
Therapy-oriented yoga, prenatal, or corporate wellness. Independent teaching with a regular group is viable and has almost no overhead.

What it pays
Indicative bands.
| Stage | Pay band | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Any experience | ₹12,000 – ₹25,000 / monthly | Varies by employer |
These are ranges, not offers. Pay varies by city, employer size, sector and your own skill more than by job title. Treat the band as the shape of the market, not as a number you can hold anyone to.
