About this course
There is no degree that makes you an actuary in India. Actuarial science is a professional qualification earned through a series of examinations set by the Institute of Actuaries of India, taken over several years, almost always while working. A B.Sc in Actuarial Science or a statistics degree helps you pass those examinations. Neither replaces them.
How you get in. The Actuarial Common Entrance Test, ACET, is the entrance to student membership of the IAI. It tests mathematics, statistics, data interpretation, English and logical reasoning at roughly Class 12 level. You can sit it after Class 12, and many candidates take it during or after a degree.
What follows. Student members work through the examination series - core principles, core practices, and then specialist principles and advanced papers in a chosen practice area such as life insurance, general insurance, pensions or health. Passing all of them, together with the required practical work experience and professionalism training, leads to Associate and then Fellow membership.
How long it really takes. Most people take six to ten years alongside full-time work. Pass rates on individual papers are low by the standards of Indian professional examinations, and sitting a paper more than once is normal rather than a failure. This is the single most important thing to understand before starting: it is a long qualification taken while employed, not a course you attend.
Where you work while qualifying. Life and general insurers, reinsurers, consulting actuaries, pension and employee benefits firms, and increasingly analytics and risk functions in banks. Employers commonly support examination fees and study leave for student members, which is a strong reason to find actuarial employment early rather than studying in isolation.
Exemptions. Some university actuarial science programmes carry exemptions from early papers. Check the IAI's current exemption list against a specific programme before choosing it on that basis, because the arrangements change.
