Cost, duration and indicative earnings
Indicative total course fee. Govt/State: about 1,00,000 - 6,00,000 total; IIT/NIT: about 6,00,000 - 10,00,000 total; Private: about 4,00,000 - 25,00,000 total.
Indicative starting salary. 30,000 - 90,000 per month.
Typical duration. 4 years.
Fees and salaries here are indicative ranges, not quotes. Confirm the current fee with the institution and treat the salary as a starting range that varies by employer and location.
What you learn
Across four years, you study computer science, statistics, machine learning and data engineering, with strong maths needed throughout.
| Stage | Core content | Alongside it |
|---|---|---|
| Throughout the 4 years | Computer science fundamentals, statistics, machine learning and data engineering. | Full-time on-campus study with laboratory training. |
Ask before you enrol. How many scheduled lab hours do students get each week for programming, statistics and machine-learning work, and does each student have access to a computer during those sessions?
Who it suits
This course suits you if you want a four-year, full-time engineering degree built around computing, maths, statistics and AI.
- You have passed, or will pass, Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry or Computer Science, and Maths.
- You are ready for JEE Main, a State CET or a private university entrance test, followed by counselling or college admission.
- You want to study machine learning and data engineering alongside computer science fundamentals.
- You are comfortable spending four years in an on-campus programme with laboratory work, rather than choosing an online or distance degree.
- You are prepared to build real mathematical grounding, because the branch name alone does not decide your outcome.
- This course does not suit you if you want to avoid Maths or need a part-time, distance or online undergraduate programme.
What it will actually cost you
Most of the cost is the four-year college fee, which varies sharply between government, IIT/NIT and private institutions.
| Line item | Typical | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Government or state institution fee | Rs 1,00,000 - 6,00,000 total | Typical total fee for the full four-year course in government or state institutions. |
| IIT or NIT fee | Rs 6,00,000 - 10,00,000 total | Typical total fee for the full four-year course at IITs and NITs. |
| Private institution fee | Rs 4,00,000 - 25,00,000 total | Typical total fee for the full four-year course at private institutions. |
Check the college prospectus and counselling rules for scholarships, reserved-category fee concessions and refund conditions. These differ by institution and admission route.

Certifications that change what you earn
What it pays, and what changes it
In India, starting pay is typically ₹30,000 to ₹90,000 a month. Your maths, programming work, projects and the kind of employer matter more than the branch name alone.
India
Technology product companies, analytics and consulting firms, banking and fintech, healthcare analytics, e-commerce, AI startups and global capability centres hire for related roles.
| Stage | Monthly | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level | ₹30,000 - ₹90,000 | After B.Tech, with strong programming, statistics and project work. |
| Early career | After building experience in data, machine learning or data engineering work. | |
| Experienced | With several years of relevant experience and responsibility for larger data or AI work. |
Indicative bands for 2026, not measured salary data. What people actually earn varies by employer, state and sector.
The honest part
The branch name alone will not get you a data job. You will spend four years with programming, probability, statistics, databases and machine learning. Maths is not a side subject here. Fees range widely, from about ₹1 lakh to ₹25 lakh in total, depending on the college. Entry-level pay also varies, with an indicative range of ₹30,000 to ₹90,000 a month.
There is real demand in product companies, banks, fintech, consulting, healthcare analytics, e-commerce and global capability centres. The degree also gives you a base for M.Tech, MS or research later. Unlike a narrow tool-based certificate, it combines computer science with data engineering and statistics. That base matters when software tools change.
Students who do well usually build their maths and coding skills from the first year instead of waiting for an AI subject in later semesters. They practise with real datasets, learn to clean data and explain results clearly. They also check the syllabus, faculty and lab access before paying a high fee, rather than choosing only by the AI label.
