Fees and salaries here are indicative ranges, not quotes. Confirm the current fee with the institution and treat the salary as a starting range that varies by employer and location.

05 · What you learn

What you learn

Across four years, you study how metals and other materials are extracted, processed, tested and used in industry.

StageCore contentAlongside it
Throughout the 4-year course Extractive metallurgy, physical metallurgy, materials characterisation and processing. Laboratory training, as this is a full-time course requiring laboratory work.

Ask before you enrol. How many scheduled laboratory hours each week will I get for materials characterisation and processing, and which tests will I perform myself?

06 · Who it suits

Who it suits

This course suits you if you want to study metals and materials for work in steel plants, foundries, manufacturing or research.

  • You have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, or are preparing for it.
  • You are willing to study full-time for four years, including laboratory work in materials characterisation and processing.
  • You want to learn how metals are extracted, processed and tested, rather than focus only on software or electronics.
  • You are considering JEE Main, JEE Advanced or a State CET for admission.
  • You may plan to take GATE later for PSU recruitment or an M.Tech in metallurgy or materials.
  • It does not suit you if you need an online or distance degree, because this programme is full-time only.
07 · Cost

What it will actually cost you

Over four years, tuition ranges from about Rs 1,00,000 - 25,00,000, mainly depending on whether you get a government, IIT/NIT or private seat.

Line itemTypicalWorth knowing
Government or state institution fee Rs 1,00,000 - 6,00,000 total This is the indicative tuition range for the full four-year course.
IIT or NIT fee Rs 6,00,000 - 10,00,000 total This is the indicative tuition range for the full four-year course.
Private institution fee Rs 4,00,000 - 25,00,000 total This is the indicative tuition range for the full four-year course.

Government and state institutions may offer reserved-category fee concessions and scholarships under their own rules. Check the college fee notice and refund rules before accepting a seat through counselling.

09 · Earnings

What it pays, and what changes it

In India, a fresh B.Tech Metallurgical and Materials Engineering graduate typically starts at ₹28,000 to ₹55,000 a month. Steel and metals plants, aluminium and copper producers, foundries, automotive materials teams, research laboratories and defence PSUs are common employers.

India

Pay moves up with plant experience, responsibility for production or quality, and roles in larger steel and metals operations.

StageMonthlyWhat it depends on
Entry level ₹28,000–₹55,000 Fresh graduate role in a steel plant, metals producer, foundry, materials team or research laboratory.
Early career ₹45,000–₹75,000 A few years of shop-floor, process, quality or materials-testing experience.
Experienced ₹70,000–₹1,20,000 Several years in production, process engineering, quality, failure analysis or materials development.
Senior technical or PSU role ₹1,00,000–₹1,80,000 Strong experience in a major metals operation or a PSU role, often supported by GATE for recruitment.

Indicative bands for 2026, not measured salary data. What people actually earn varies by employer, state and sector.

10 · The honest part

The honest part

Metallurgy is not a broad campus-placement branch at every college. Jobs often sit in steel plants, foundries, aluminium or copper units, where process work may involve industrial sites rather than an office. Government-seat fees can be about ₹1 lakh to ₹6 lakh in total, but private fees can reach ₹25 lakh. Starting pay is often in the ₹28,000 to ₹55,000 a month range, so compare the fee with likely early earnings.

The subject has a clear use in industries that make, shape, test and improve metals. You study extraction, heat treatment, alloys, failure of materials and characterisation. GATE gives a recognised route towards PSU recruitment and M.Tech study. Still, PSU selection is competitive, and a B.Tech degree alone does not place you in one.

Students who do well usually build strong basics in thermodynamics, phase diagrams and materials testing instead of treating laboratory work as a formality. They use internships and projects to learn how a plant process or foundry actually works. Many also prepare steadily for GATE, because it keeps PSU and higher-study options open.
