Ask before you enrol. How many hours of laboratory work do Petroleum Engineering students receive each week, and which drilling, reservoir and production practicals are actually conducted?

06 · Who it suits

Who it suits

This course suits you if you want to work on drilling, oil and gas reservoirs, or production operations after a four-year engineering degree.

  • You have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and are ready for JEE Main, JEE Advanced, a State CET or a university entrance test.
  • You are comfortable with a full-time, on-campus course that includes laboratory training. Distance and online study are not permitted for this programme.
  • You are willing to take jobs in places where oil and gas work is concentrated, including offshore sites, refineries or oilfield locations.
  • You understand that hiring in this sector rises and falls with oil prices, so job openings are not steady every year.
  • This course does not suit you if you need a career with predictable jobs in every city or want to study engineering online.
07 · Cost

What it will actually cost you

For the full four-year degree, fees range from about Rs 1,00,000 - 25,00,000, depending mainly on the type of college and seat.

Line itemTypicalWorth knowing
Government or state institution fee Rs 1,00,000 - 6,00,000 total This is the indicative fee for the full four-year course at government or state institutions.
IIT or NIT fee Rs 6,00,000 - 10,00,000 total This is the indicative full-course fee at IITs and NITs.
Private institution fee Rs 4,00,000 - 25,00,000 total Private-college costs vary widely, so check the written fee schedule before accepting a seat.

Government and state institutions may offer fee concessions for reserved categories and eligible students. Read the college refund rules before paying a large admission or seat-confirmation amount.

09 · Earnings

What it pays, and what changes it

In India, petroleum engineering starts at about ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 a month. Pay is stronger in drilling, offshore work, oilfield services and refineries when hiring is active, but the sector moves with oil prices and jobs are concentrated in selected locations.

Starting pay differs by employer, role and work location.

StageMonthlyWhat it depends on
Entry level ₹35,000–₹80,000 Graduate role in drilling, reservoir engineering, production operations, refinery work or oilfield services.

10 · The honest part

The honest part

Petroleum engineering jobs rise and fall with oil prices. Hiring is concentrated around oil and gas fields, refineries, drilling work and offshore operations, so you may need to move away from your home state. A four-year full-time degree also costs money: government and state colleges are usually far cheaper than private colleges, where total fees can reach ₹25 lakh.

When the sector is busy, this branch has some of the better starting pay in engineering. The recorded starting range is about ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 a month, but that is a range, not a promise. The work connects directly to drilling, reservoirs and production operations, with routes into oilfield services, refineries, PSUs and, for some graduates, the Middle East oil sector.

Students who do well usually build more than exam marks. They learn the technical subjects properly, take relevant internships or apprenticeships where available, and stay willing to relocate. Many also prepare for GATE if they want PSU recruitment or an M.Tech. They do not choose the branch only because of a high salary in a good oil-price year.
