Who can appear
Eligibility to appear
A recognised law degree and enrolment conditions prescribed by the Bar Council of India. AIBE is a post-degree professional certification examination, not an LLB admission test. Follow current BCI enrolment and attempt rules.
Eligibility to appear is not the same as eligibility to be admitted. Individual institutions add their own criteria on top of the exam's rules.
Overview
What this exam is
The Bar Council of India's examination that a law graduate must pass to receive the Certificate of Practice and appear in court. It is not an admission test and has nothing to do with entering an LLB - it comes after the degree, once you are enrolled with a State Bar Council.
Subjects
What the paper tests
Core practising subjects - constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, civil procedure, evidence, contract, family law, professional ethics and the areas a practitioner meets daily. The examination is open book, so bare Acts and permitted material may be carried in.
PreparationPlan
How to prepare
Open book misleads people into under-preparing. You cannot search your way through the paper in the time available, so the real work is knowing your bare Acts well enough to find a provision in seconds - tabbing and indexing your material properly is worth more than extra reading. Professional ethics is small in the syllabus and reliably tested. The standard is competence, not distinction.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is this an entrance exam for law college?
No, and this is the most common confusion about it. It comes after your law degree, once you are enrolled with a State Bar Council, and passing it grants the Certificate of Practice you need to appear in court.
It is open book - does that make it easy?
It makes it different, not easy. There is not enough time to search your way through the paper, so the real preparation is knowing your bare Acts well enough to locate a provision in seconds. Tabbing and indexing your material is worth more than extra reading.
What material can I carry?
Bare Acts and permitted material as specified in the current notification, generally without commentary or annotation. Rules on what counts as annotated have caught candidates out, so check the current instructions before you prepare your books.
Can I practise while waiting to clear it?
Provisional enrolment arrangements have existed and have changed. Because this affects whether you can appear in court and when, confirm the current position with your State Bar Council rather than relying on what a senior tells you.
