Overview

About Civil Services

The civil services run the administrative machinery of the country — district administration, police, revenue, foreign service, audit, taxation and dozens of allied services — at both the central and state level. Selection is by examination alone, which makes it one of the genuinely level playing fields in Indian public life.

How you get in. The UPSC Civil Services Examination needs any bachelor degree in any subject, and runs in three stages: a preliminary objective paper, a written main examination with an optional subject, and an interview. State public service commissions run parallel examinations for state services with the same shape. Age limits and a capped number of attempts apply, and vary by category.

The odds, stated plainly. Around a million candidates apply each year for roughly a thousand posts. That is a success rate well under one per cent, and it does not improve much when you narrow it to serious candidates. Most people who clear it take multiple attempts across several years. None of this is a reason not to try — people do clear it, from every kind of background, without expensive coaching. It is a reason to try with your eyes open.

The honest part. Two things protect you. First, prepare alongside a degree, a job or a professional qualification rather than instead of one, and decide in advance how many attempts you will give it and what you will do afterwards. The cost of this examination is rarely the fees; it is the years, and the people who are hurt by it are the ones who had no second plan. Second, know that UPSC is not the only door into government. State public service commissions, SSC CGL, banking recruitment, railway and defence examinations, and state police recruitment together hire vastly more people every year, with real security and real authority. They receive a fraction of the attention because there is less money in coaching for them, not because they are lesser careers.
