Overview

About Forestry and Fisheries

Forestry is the science and administration of forests — conservation, plantation and silviculture, wildlife management, forest produce and the protection of habitat. Fisheries covers capture fishing, aquaculture and fish farming, processing, and the export trade built on them. Both are natural resource fields with a strong government presence and a growing private one.

How you get in. A four-year B.Sc in Forestry or a four-year B.F.Sc in Fisheries Science after Class 12 with science, through ICAR or state agricultural university entrances. Above them sit M.Sc and PhD routes into research. Diploma and certificate courses feed technician and field roles.

Where the work is. The Indian Forest Service, recruited through the UPSC examination, and state forest departments, which recruit range officers, foresters and guards through state commissions in far larger numbers; wildlife institutes, conservation organisations and environmental consultancies; the paper, plywood and forest produce industries; and on the fisheries side, aquaculture operations, hatcheries, feed companies, processing and export firms, and the fisheries departments of coastal states.

The honest part, and it points in two directions. The Indian Forest Service is very small — a hundred or so posts a year against an enormous field — and preparing for it as the only plan is the same mistake as treating UPSC as the only route into government. State forest department recruitment is the realistic door and it hires steadily. Fisheries deserves a separate note: India is among the largest fish producers in the world, aquaculture and seafood exports are growing, and the field receives a fraction of the applications that agriculture does. For a student who is willing to work in coastal or inland production areas, it is one of the genuinely under-competed technical routes on this site.
