Who it suits
This course suits you if you want a four-year science degree linked to forests, crops, nurseries, wildlife or environmental work.
- You have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Maths, or another accepted science combination.
- You are ready for full-time, on-campus study for four years rather than a short job-focused course.
- You want to prepare for ICAR AIEEA UG, CUET UG or a state agricultural university entrance test.
- You are considering work with a state forest department, wildlife sanctuary, conservation NGO, nursery or environmental consultancy.
- You may want to attempt UPSC Indian Forest Service or state PSC forest posts after your degree.
- It does not suit you if you want an online degree, unless a university has specific UGC-DEB approval for that mode.
What it will actually cost you
For the four-year degree, budget about Rs 50,000 - 3,00,000 in total at a State Agricultural University, or about Rs 3,00,000 - 10,00,000 in total at a private university.
| Line item | Typical | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| State Agricultural University fee | Rs 50,000 - 3,00,000 total | This is the indicative total course fee for the four-year programme. |
| Private university fee | Rs 3,00,000 - 10,00,000 total | This is the indicative total course fee for the four-year programme. |
Government and university seats may have reserved-category fee concessions or scholarships, subject to the institution's rules. Check the fee refund policy before accepting admission, especially if counselling results are still pending.

Certifications that change what you earn
What it pays, and what changes it
In India, a B.Sc Forestry or Horticulture graduate typically starts at ₹20,000 to ₹38,000 a month. Pay rises most clearly after you gain field experience or enter government forest, horticulture, research or environmental roles.
India
Government posts, forest departments, conservation work, research institutes, environmental consultancies and horticulture businesses pay differently.
| Stage | Monthly | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level | ₹20,000–₹38,000 | First job after the degree in a nursery, conservation NGO, consultancy, research support role or private horticulture business. |
| Early career | ₹30,000–₹45,000 | A few years of field experience in forest management, horticulture, wildlife conservation, agroforestry or environmental work. |
| Experienced roles | ₹45,000–₹70,000 | Several years of experience, stronger technical responsibility, or a role in a state department, research institute or environmental consultancy. |
| Officer and specialist route | Varies by post and employer | Selection through UPSC Indian Forest Service, state PSC forest posts, or progression into specialist and senior roles. Pay follows the applicable government or employer scale. |
Indicative bands for 2026, not measured salary data. What people actually earn varies by employer, state and sector.
The honest part
Fieldwork is not a side activity in this degree. You may spend time in nurseries, farms, forests or conservation sites, depending on the university. Government roles are competitive and usually need separate exams or state recruitment. Private starting pay is often modest, with the indicated range around ₹20,000 to ₹38,000 a month. Fees also vary sharply, from about ₹50,000 to ₹3 lakh at state agricultural universities and far more at private universities.
The degree gives you a base for work in forestry, horticulture, conservation, nurseries and environmental consulting. It also supports later routes such as M.Sc Forestry, Horticulture or Wildlife Science, and forest service preparation. You do not need a licence to practise, but a degree alone does not put you into the Indian Forest Service or a state forest officer post.
Students who progress well usually build experience alongside classes. They take field projects seriously, learn plant identification and basic nursery or farm operations, and look for internships with forest departments, research institutes or conservation organisations. They also prepare early for the entrance or recruitment exam that matches their target job, instead of waiting until the final year.
